Message from the people (field recording)
“[…] As you can see we’re so in the process of conducting a peaceful protest here at these distant waters far from the coast where we believe that oil extraction needs to be stopped. We consider that your drilling operation is not safe. It’s not safe for the planet. And we have a message for you, from the people, thousands of people who feel the same way: we will stand our ground. In peaceful protest at an operation that is most dangerous, the drilling for more oil in a time when the Earth can least afford to emit more CO2 and affect climate change.”
The Outlaw Ocean project
Music and journalism are simply two ways of telling stories, and The Outlaw Ocean Music Project is one of the projects Die Stadt has been most enthusiastically involved in, as it is not only an artistic endeavor but also an opportunity to contribute to raising awareness of a reality invisible to most: the human and environmental tragedy that unfolds daily in our seas and oceans.
New York Times journalist and reporter Ian Urbina has brought together a large group of musicians from all corners of the world to write music inspired by his book The Outlaw Ocean: a chronicle of lawless oceans where pirates, fishermen, large multinational corporations, and environmental activists coexist and fight a silent war.
The result is a collection of eclectic musical pieces ranging from ambient to world music, techno, and jazz, giving sound and voice to the wildest and most unknown frontier remaining on the planet: the oceans.
Music by Die Stadt for the Ocean
Los temas de Die Stadt, en su estilo electrónico downtempo, recogen tres aspectos destacados de la obra de Urbina.
On the one hand, “The Wildest Frontier” highlights how unknown the oceans are to us, even though they cover three-quarters of our planet. Secondly, “Message from the People” is a tribute to those who have made defending the seas their way of life.
Finally, the transformation of fishermen’s songs into whale songs in “Voices of the Sea” is simply a reminder of the obvious: the coexistence of humankind and ocean ecosystems is not only ancient, but also essential for our survival.
All three compositions by Die Stadt are included on the compilation album “Tragedy of the Commons,” which can be heard in its entirety on The Outlaw Ocean Music Project website.
